Ride the famous Shinkansen bullet train and zip from Tokyo to Kyoto for a full day in the ancient capital. Visit golden Kinkakuji Temple, Nijo Castle, the Kyoto Imperial Palace and more, with time to explore on your own in the afternoon! Set out from Tokyo to Kyoto an on all day adventure. Your day begins as you board the Nozomi, Japan's fastest bullet train. This scenic and efficient way to travel to Kyoto is hard to beat! Once in Kyoto, you will visit Nijo Castle, where in 1867 the last Edo Shogun restored the authority of Japan's Imperial Court. Next is Kinkakuji Temple, home of the Golden Pavilion, a glittering pagoda gilded with about $5 million worth of gold leaf! No visit to Kyoto is complete without seeing the Imperial Palace, where you can catch a glimpse of ancient imperial life. In the afternoon you will have extra time to explore on your own, so you can personalize your visit.

  • Any cancellations made between 2 business days (18:00 local time) to 1 business days (18:00 local time) prior to the activity will be subject to a charge of 40% of the total amount.
  • Any cancellations made between 1 business days (18:00 local time) to 1 hours prior to the activity start time will be subject to a charge of 50% of the total amount.
  • Any cancellations made after 1 hours prior to the activity will be subject to a charge of 100% of the total amount.

    Hotel pick-up:
    Train tickets and itineraries are delivered to your hotel at least one day prior to your departure. Make sure you provide your correct address and name under which your room is registered when booking.
    Tokyo City i pick-up:
    Please go to Tokyo City i and pick up the tickets on your own by the day prior to tour departure.
    Pick-up at Tokyo City i is possible starting 3 days before the tour departure date until the day prior to departure.
    Pick-up is not available on the day of booking and the day after booking (business days only).
    Please check in at the AVANTI Sunrise Desk once you arrive at Kyoto Station (between 8:00-8:25 AM). It is near the Hachijo Exit of Kyoto Station. The map attached shows the check-in location and useful landmarks.

Restrictions

  • Participants under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • Pick up at Tokyo City is possible from 3 days until the day prior to the tour departure date.
  • This tour is available to overseas visitors only.

Additional Notes

  • Tickets can only be delivered to hotels and hostels with a 24 hour front desk. Delivery to AirBnB accommodations and private homes is not possible.
  • Children ages 0-5 will not have their own seat. If you would like a seat for a child aged 0-5, please book them as a child (ages 6-11).
  • You will not be able to choose the departure time, arrival time or specific seat in the bullet train.
  • Expenses incurred during the self-guided exploration free time of the tour are not included in the tour price.
  • Lost or stolen bullet train tickets will not be replaced. Should you misplace your ticket, you will be required to purchase a new ticket at your own expense.
  • Kyoto Imperial Palace is closed on Mondays. If a Monday falls on a national holiday, the Tuesday following it will be closed instead. On these days, the tour will proceed to Kitano Tenmangu Shrine instead.
  • Nijo Castle is closed on Tuesdays in January, July, August, and December. If Tuesday is a national holiday, Nijo Castle will be closed on Wednesday. On these days, the tour will proceed to Ryoanji Temple instead.
  • During your free time in the afternoon, there will be no English-speaking guide to accompany you.

Proceed to your chosen station on your own and board the speedy Nozomi Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto. Your train tickets and itineraries with exact times will be delivered to your hotel at least one day prior to your departure.

Nijo Castle
The grounds consist of two concentric rings of fortification, the Honmaru (main circle of defense) and the Ninomaru (secondary circle of defense), along with beautiful gardens and various support buildings.

Kinkakuji Temple
The top two floors of this gorgeous zen temple are completely covered in gold leaf. Surrounded by one of the most exquisite Muromachi period gardens in Kyoto, the Golden Pavilion is one of Kyoto's must-sees!

Kyoto Imperial Palace (All Days Except Mondays*)
Located within the beautiful gardens of Kyoto Gyoen, this architectural beauty was the residence of the emperor of Japan until 1869. *Mondays, Tuesdays if Monday is a national holiday, May 14-17 for the Aoi Festival, New Year's holidays and whenever there is an Imperial Household event

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine (Mondays and Days when Imperial Palace is Closed)
This shrine's main hall is a designated national treasure and is famous for housing the God of scholarship. The shrine is especially beautiful during the plum blossom and autumn leaf seasons.

Free Time in the Afternoon
Explore the ancient capital of Kyoto on your own in the afternoon. Some recommended sights are Kiyomizudera Temple, the geisha district of Gion, Nishiki Market. You can also choose to enjoy a stroll through the little streets of Higashiyama. Visit at your leisure until it is time to return to Tokyo.
